2027 Open Enrollment Checklist for Self-Employed People

Getting ready for 2027 health insurance? Start with your renewal notice, expected household income, doctors, prescriptions and a realistic annual budget. A careful comparison before you enroll can help you spot a plan that no longer fits your needs.
This checklist is for freelancers, contractors, creators and small business owners shopping for individual or family coverage.
When should you start preparing?
HealthCare.gov says enrollment for 2027 coverage starts November 1, 2026. Prepare your information now and check your official Marketplace for its current closing date and coverage start dates. State Marketplace schedules can differ. Employer and Medicare enrollment follow separate rules.
1. Put your renewal and current benefits side by side
Save your renewal notice, current premium, plan name and benefit summary in one folder. Write down what worked this year and what caused a surprise: a specialist bill, an unavailable doctor, a prescription cost or a deductible you did not expect.
Use those concerns as your comparison checklist. Do not assume a familiar insurer name means the new year's benefits or network will be identical.
2. Estimate next year's income thoughtfully
For Marketplace coverage, self-employed applicants estimate net self-employment income for the year of coverage. Business revenue alone is not the same as net income. Gather income and expense records, consider expected changes, and follow the Marketplace instructions for other household income. Update your application if your estimate changes during the year.
3. Make a doctor and prescription list
List the practices and hospitals you want to use, including their locations. Separately record your medications, dosages and preferred pharmacy. Check each candidate plan using its exact name and year. Bring questions to a consultation; avoid putting medical details in a public comment.
4. Compare the full budget
Compare premiums alongside deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and the applicable out-of-pocket limit. Review what is excluded and how out-of-network care is handled. A lower monthly payment does not by itself tell you which option costs less overall.
For a practical worksheet, give each plan a column with these rows: monthly premium, doctor access, prescription costs, routine-care costs, major-care exposure and unresolved questions. Mark unconfirmed answers clearly rather than treating a blank as a benefit.
5. Confirm the final steps before changing coverage
Keep the plan documents and enrollment confirmation. Confirm any requested documents, the first premium payment and the effective date with the Marketplace or insurer. Before ending existing coverage, establish when the replacement actually starts.
